Mr. Pratik Hiwarkar is an artist, writer, and director who have worked in some of the commercial films in the industry. He started as a Hockey player in his teenage years and represented as a state-level player till his second year of graduation. Later due to some reasons, his connections with Hockey started to lose. He was also a football player. During his graduation, he wanted to be an Income Tax officer, under the influence of the Bollywood film ‘Special Chabbis’. Later on, he auditioned for acting in the local college and got selected. After a few days, he got a call to attend a workshop to learn acting skills. This required money and his father refused to support him. He convinced his father for 15 days and finally succeeded. He completed the workshop and returned to his hometown, Nagpur. His father came to pick him up at the railway station when he got the call from Mumbai that he was selected for some role in the leading TV serial of that time, Kumkum Bhagya. He was summoned immediately to Mumbai. He, however, could not afford an immediate flight. He lost his opportunity there.
Mr. Hiwarkar did not give up. He kept on auditioning and learning. He also auditioned for a role in a documentary by Mushtaq Khan. He was asked money for playing the lead role. He learned about theatres during this process. He started doing plays and learned a lot from them. He did short films, too.
To succeed in theatres and Bollywood, one has to live in Mumbai. Mr. Hiwarkar thought to himself that since he had gained much experience in theatre and short films, he was ready to explore the bigger part of the industry. However, his upcoming exams for graduation stopped him. Due to his shoots and auditions, he could not attend classes. He is thankful to his teachers who helped him last minute and made him learn his subjects. He scored well in his exams, which made his father force him to look for a job.
After completing his graduation, MR. Hiwarkar shifted to Mumbai with the thought that he would try an acting career first and then if he fails, he would look for a job. During his journey, he came in contact with an artist from Nagpur, Mayuresh Joshi, who recommended Mr. Hiwarkar to join Abhinay Katta in Thane. That gave him some hope.
Mr. Hiwarkar also tried his hands on Marathi Film Industry. During his journey, he also came across fake production houses. After a few days, he got chance for theatre but he was very far from where he lived. He asked the producers and directors for help, but they denied. It was getting difficult to manage with little money. They started to walk to their destination.
While struggling, Mr. Hiwarkar went on to explore Abhinay Katta. When he entered the studio, he was awestruck with the sight of trophies. He made a decision that would get a job in acting from here by hook or by crook. He met Mr. Kiran Sir there, whom Mr. Hiwarkar considers as his Godfather. Thus began the journey of being an actor for Mr. Hiwarkar.
Being in a film industry, one comes across multi-talented people who are actors as well as directors. Mr. Hiwarkar wanted to try his hands on writing as well. Luckily, he has a writer friend who guided him. As it is rightly said, practice makes a man perfect. Mr. Hiwarkar kept on writing and started publishing his blogs too. At the same time, he started shooting short videos with his phone camera. His friends liked his videos, encouraging him to write bigger things and direct his short film. For casting, he chose his group of friends who would support him and guide him about right and wrong. In this way, Mr. Hiwarkar established himself as an actor, a writer, and a director. While talking about his struggles, Mr. Hiwarkar remembered his days and how it is easier said than done.
After doing a few movies, Mr. Hiwarkar wanted to do something of his own. He started to work on the script of the movie during the lockdown. Making a movie requires a great deal of money and no producer was convinced to pour money into Mr. Hiwarkar’s film.
He then heard of the IFH competition, where he participated. Out of 70,000 films, Mr. Hiwarkar’s film came in the top 10. This boosted his confidence. With his team, Mr. Hiwarkar made an innovative film called “Kapda”. This movie proved to be a turning point in his life. It won many awards and appreciation.
Mr. Hiwarkar is currently working on a Marathi Film that includes many great Marathi artists.
The Legit Talks asked Mr. Hiwarkar about his learnings from the struggle. He said that learning is a continuous process and it never ends.
Making a career in the entertainment industry is very difficult. To succeed, Mr. Hiwarkar advises that do not chase fame but chase good content and hard work.
