Hailing from a small town in Bihar, Mr. Ravi Prakash is a Kathak artist and a professional trainer for 10 years. Talking about his education, Ravi has pursued graduation and a masters in Kathak and is currently preparing for Ph.D. He has also pursued masters in Yoga.
Ravi has been teaching since the 8th standard. He taught the students of the 7th standard. Then when he was in 11th, he was selected as a teacher at Delhi Public School, Bihar. He taught there for two years. After gaining proper education in Kathak, he started teaching Kathak as well.
People often ask what is Kathak, to which Ravi replies that it is an ancient Indian classical Dance Form. He says that this dance form represents the language, attire, culture, and thoughts of India. There are different perceptions of Kathak, but for Ravi, Kathak is the journey from happiness to peace. Being consistent in such a hard dance form is difficult. Mr. Ravi always keeps in mind the words of his Guru, give your 100 percent in whatever work you do, without expecting any results. These words helped him to be consistent all through his life.
The Legit Talks asked Mr. Ravi what qualities make a good Kathak dancer. He said that there are both inner and outer qualities that make a good Kathak dancer. The outer qualities include learning and riyaz (practice) and keeping yourself in good health. The inner qualities include the elimination of jealousy, ego, and hatred. Ravi says that the outer qualities would make you a good dancer but combining both outer and inner qualities would make you a great artist.
Ravi faced a lot of criticism for his career choice, even from his family members. But he continued on his path without looking back. He said that there was a time when he wanted to be famous, but it slid out of him eventually when he began deep learning. People nowadays give variations to the ancient dance form, which he dislikes. Retaining the old culture is what classical dancing is all about. It should not only reflect in your dance, but also in your thoughts and personality.
Kathak in itself is a ladder to the spiritual journey, Ravi told The Legit Talks. Kathak keeps your body highly active, but to keep flexibility for Kathak, Yoga must be learned. Combining art and yoga helped Ravi to choose between right and wrong.
He talked about his Gurus. His first guru, Yaaminiji, taught him to earn by himself while still learning kathak. Pt. Rajendra Ganganiji taught him how to be calm in every situation and how to be disciplined.
Ravi prefers a solo performance and his every performance is memorable for him, though his first performance is memorable for him. He says if you put your devotion into it, your every performance would be good.
The message that Ravi wants to give to the audience is that be honest in your life and with your work. If you did something bad, talk it out with others, that is how honest you should be. Mr. Ravi Prakash thanked The Legit Talks for inviting him on the show. He appreciates the efforts of the team and wishes them great success ahead.
